Changbai  Mountain

No. 93-9   (1993.9.3.)

In the east  of  Jilin Province,  northeast China  lies  Changbai Mountain
where there is a crater  surrounded  by  hot springs,  jagged rocks, and
immense forests as a result of volcanic eruption. The accumulated water
of this crater gave birth to a lake called "Tianchi",  meaning "pond in the
heaven" which looks like a sapphire carved into high peaks.
In 1961, a nature reserve was established here by the State with a total
area of 190,000 ha..  In 1980,  it was  admitted  into  The International
Man and Biosphere Reserve Network.
