China,  a country with the richest bamboo resources in the world, has over 400 species of bamboo plants belonging to 39 genera. The area of  bamboo  forests  is  3.8 million ha., of  which  Mao Bamboo  (Ph. pupescens Mazei ex H. de Lehaie) covers 2.6 million ha.. The variety, area,  stock volume  and  output of bamboo  each takes up 1/3 of the world's  total,  which  has  made  China  known  as  "the Kingdom of Bamboo".
